Lighter ruby, garnet rim. Earthy, some wood polish, figs, light leather note, some oxidized strawberries, somewhat subdued nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, lacks some fruit and seems a bit edgy and herbal mid palate and in the finish, a slight unclean note about it, good length. I haven't tasted Ampeau's wines in a while now but remember this slightly off aroma as somewhat typical from this producer, is it brett? It nearly blows off after two hours but never completely.

Domaine Robert Ampeau, located in the region of Puligny-Montrachet in Burgundy, is currently run by Michel Ampeau, after the recent and unfortunate death of his father, Robert, in 2004. The domaine holdings cover about 10 hectares of vineyard, including land in 10 Premier Crus, 4 of which are in Meursault, while the other are scattered around Puligny, Beaune, Blagny and Savigny.

Robert’s methods in the vineyard were often considered innovative: he was one of the first winemakers in Burgundy to allow other plants to grow in between the rows of vines to encourage the roots of the vines to burrow deeper into the soil, in order to find water and nutrients. The Ampeaus were among the first to harvest by machine but quality does not seem to have suffered.
